The Most Popular Travel Destination Nowadays According to Statistics

According to the latest available 2025 tourism statistics and 2026 booking trends, Europe still dominates international tourism, but Japan and other Asian destinations are gaining quickly. Global international arrivals reached about 1.52 billion in 2025, up roughly 4% from 2024.

1. France — about 102 million international visitors in 2025
   France remains the world’s most visited country. Paris, Lourdes, Provence, the French Riviera, wine regions, historic churches and museums give it exceptionally broad appeal. France also saw strong growth from American travelers in 2025.

2. Spain — 96.8 million visitors in 2025
   Spain is currently one of tourism’s strongest performers and could approach 100 million international visitors in 2026. Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Granada, Santiago de Compostela, beaches, food, history and relatively good value make it attractive to many types of travelers.

3. Italy — exceptionally strong in 2026
   Italy continues to benefit from enormous demand for Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. European Travel Commission data show Italy among the European destinations recording particularly strong international-arrival growth in 2026.
   For Catholic and pilgrimage travel, Italy has an additional advantage: Rome and Vatican City, Assisi, Padua and countless basilicas allow travelers to combine faith, culture, history and leisure in one journey.

4. Japan — one of the fastest-rising major destinations
   Japan is now one of the standout destinations of 2026. Current summer travel data placed Japan second globally in popularity in one major booking dataset, behind Spain, while official Japanese statistics continue to show very strong inbound traffic.
   Why? Cherry blossoms, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Mt. Fuji, Japanese cuisine, safety, efficient transportation, anime and pop culture all broaden its appeal across generations.

5. Portugal — growing rapidly
   Portugal is benefiting from travelers seeking European culture and scenery at somewhat less crowded destinations than Spain, France and Italy. Summer flight bookings to Portugal were reported 21% higher year over year, while hotel searches increased 16%.

6. Greece
   Greece is another notable European growth destination in 2026. International arrivals to Europe are up, with Greece, Italy and Malta among the countries recording some of the strongest increases.
   Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Mediterranean cruising, archaeological sites and island experiences give Greece both cruise and land-tour appeal.

7. Türkiye
   Türkiye continues attracting travelers because it combines history, culture, religious heritage and comparatively attractive pricing. Current industry reporting indicates that demand is strengthening partly as price-conscious travelers look for alternatives to more expensive Mediterranean destinations.

8. South Korea
   South Korea is becoming especially important among younger and multigenerational Asian travelers. In current 2026 travel data, South Korea recorded one of the strongest increases among major destinations, helped by K-pop, K-dramas, Korean food, beauty culture and Seoul’s modern attractions.
